Continue reading

President Donald Trump’s foreign policy often seems designed to spite his predecessor. Barack Obama’s administration helped negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Trump voided it. Obama urged countries to accept more Syrian refugees. Trump is accepting far fewer. Obama brought us the Iran nuclear deal. Trump says it’s an embarrassment. Continue reading

The affronts keep coming, one after the other. With every passing day, Turkey, which professes to be a U.S. ally, is acting more like an enemy than a friend. Washington-Ankara relations are in a deep crisis. And the NATO alliance, of which Turkey is a vital member, is starting to feel the pain as well. Continue reading

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: About the same proportion of Turks view the US (72%) and ISIS (73%) as a threat to their country. That’s weird. Erdoğan’s generation of Islamists were anti-American largely because of the Arab-Israeli dispute – although they feared Soviet communism more than American imperialism. Future generations of Turkish Islamists will hate America even more because they will have gone through long years of anti-American indoctrination by a beloved leader and his powerful propaganda machine.

The request for Turkey to annex the Turkish-held part of Cyprus is on the table, Turkey’s deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdag said on Monday, commenting on remarks last week by so-called foreign minister in the north Tahsin Ertugruloglu.
The Turkish deputy PM said the idea is something that “can be done”.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Turkey no longer needs EU membership. His son Bilal who plays an important role in Turkey’s politics went even further and described the Europeans as “gavur” (indifels). The comments come after 12-year-long accession talks with Brussels grind to a halt.
“Ultimately, I want to see every single woman in this country covered from head to toe, I want to see the hands of thieves cut, I want to see adulterers stoned to death, I want to see sharia law in Europe.”
