Ottoman conquest of Nicosia, 9 September 1570


Hayder Pasha Mosque, originally known as St. Catherine’s church, which was converted to a mosque upon the conquest of Nicosia by the Ottomans.

On September 9, 1570, the Turks captured the city of Nicosia. 20,000 Nicosians were put to death, and every church, public building, and palace was looted. Only women and boys who were captured to be sold as slaves were spared.
